Early life and education.
Mr Elton was born in Manchester, United Kingdom. He spent some of his youth in Manchester where he was born by a Malaysian Mother and a Korean Father. At 18, he entered the University of Birmingham where he graduated with an engineering degree, holding the 11th spot in the degree ranking. He then became an engineer of the Corps des mines.
Career in the public sector
Elton started his career in 2007 right after his college at the petroleum industry. In 2009, he got his first job in the industry with Cities Service, a fuel and power company. He was with this company when they became the acquisition of OceanIce Petroleum Corporation the following year in 2008 and became the technical advisor for environment and industry.
Career in the private sector:
In January 2010, Elton joined the Horizon Oil Group which was owned by his late father. Two years later, he was named the management of Horizon Oil exploration-production department and In 2012 he became Horizon Oil Group's senior president of the exploration production department in charge of the finance, economics and information systems and then in charge of strategy business development and R&D; in 2013.
In October 2015, following the death of his Father the CEO of the company, it was decided to separate the functions of "president of the board of directors" and "executive director". Elton was appointed CEO and president of Horizon Oil Group.
At the 2016 World Economic Forum in London, Elton attended a dinner of Mayor of London Sadiq Khan with a group of British CEOs.
Main Achievements
Elton became the Managing director and CEO of Horizon Oil Group in October 2016 following the passing away of his father who was the Founder of the company. He made history by becoming the youngest CEO to ever head a major oil company based in United Kingdom. This is a big accomplishment for him and for young aspiring executives in the petroleum industry. He has earned the position through hard work and through his leadership skills.
In 2017, at its 90th annual meeting, Elton Yu Cheung won the British Independent Petroleum Association award (BIPAA) as the youngest CEO in the oil and gas industry. The award is for lifetime achievement and it honors “an individual whose accomplishments and character best represent the highest ideals of the oil and gas industry.”
